Our client was developing a 6 degrees-of-freedom robotic patient positioning system for use in image-guided radiation therapy and seeking a software development partner to design and develop the product software. This is a Class III medical device.

  • Challenges
  • Approach & Solution
  • Outcomes

• Integration of disparate IGRT treatment systems and measurement systems, sourced from multiple PACS

• Accurate control of robotic patient positioning system (up to 6 degrees of freedom)

• Control of an integrated C-Arm CBCT imaging system and registration of intra-op images with treatment model

• Human Interface to support remote control room operation and an in-room wall screen, for use in a low light environment

• Gained understanding of the mathematics of coordinate system transformation pipeline between the IGRT data through coordinate system of the couch to the treatment beam focal point, resulting in inputs to the robotic patient positioning system to achieve the desired pose

• Conducted UX design, prototyping and usability testing activities to develop a user interface that allowed the clinician to clearly and simply understand the coordinate transformations and perform manual adjustments

• Patient Positioning System positioning the patient with 6 degrees of freedom from outside the treatment room, for efficiency of patient alignment

• Positioning with sub-millimeter precision

• Initial product release supported a small set of IGRT interfaces and imaging modalities, but was implemented using a plug-in architecture to allow adding interfaces to additional systems over the life of the product
